Organizing favorites
· Favorites can be organized into a specific folder · This will allow the user to group favorite sites into categories such as: -Search engines -Sports -Education -Games

Searching Terminology
· Search Engine -Allow you to look for information based on criterion, such as keywords · Hits -Number of items found in a response to a search query · Query -Method of filtering information
George Boole
· George Boole is a 19th century mathematician who invented the logic used on seaching the Web · Boolean Logic -Uses operators to manipulate data, based simple yes or no ranking system · Boolean Operators -AND, OR, NOT are most common operators
Search Engines
· Users should check engines help menu prior to using them the following methods · Search Engines have different database -User should use different engines(( if unsuccessfully)) to find different sites
AND/ OR+
· Most common operators used to perform searches on the web · +/AND act as the same operator -Instructs the computer to look for both words · OR -Instructs the computer to look for either word
NOT/-
· NOT/- -Excludes documents using the keyword you specify -Example: +cowboys- football -What will the above example not locate? -Dallas Cowboys Football Team
NEAR? ADJ
· NEAR/ADJ -Look for words in a certain proximately another word key -Example: Tornadoes NEAR Texas -What will this Locate? -It will locate web pages with o=tornadoes and word Texas with 25 words of tornadoes -ADJ looks for the words next to each other
Parenthesis
· Used similar to mathematics -Allows the search engine to search in a specific order. -Example: Internet AND (( Browse OR Web)) -Search engine will find all sites with internet Browser or Internet Web
Double Quotes Documents found most contain the exact phrase within the quotes
Natural Language and Phrase Searches
· Easiest method · Some search engines allow the user to use natural language
Metasearch Engines · Search several different search engines for your key words
Search Catalogs
· Search engines have directories to help the user to find information · They may be setup in different ways: -Hierarchical or meta-tree structure -Subject catalogs
Links
· Links allow the user to move from one part of a site to another or from one part of a site to another · Links are underlined or are in a different color · Clicking on a link will move you to that location · Links are vital tools in finding appropriate information
Authority
· Is the author a well-regarded name that you recognize? · Does the online document contain a biography and e-mail address? · Did you link this site from a site you trust? · Are you led to additional information about the author? · Who is the sponsor? · Is the sponsor of the gale reputable?
Bias
· Is it clear what organization is sponsoring the page? · Is there a link to the sponsoring organizations Web site? · Is the page actually an as disguised as information?
Dates
Credible Web sites will include the date that it was created and the date of its last update
Comprehensiveness
· What is the depth of the information? · Always use additional print and/or electronic sources to complement the information provided. This will help verify the information provided on the site
Reliability
· Does the site have an academic governmental, or commercial affiliation, or it the source a newsgroup?
Objectivity
· Does the information show a minimum of bias? · Is the page designed to sway opinion? · Is there any advertising on the page?

Components
· Internet Service Providers · Browsers · Internet Addresses ((domains)) · Search Engines
Connecting to the Internet
· In order to connect to the Internet you will need the following -Computer with a modem or a network cable · Communication Program -Called a Web browser · Make arrangements with an Internet Service Provider -Contact the “host” computer
Internet service provider ((ISP))
· ISPs -Maintain the host computer -Provide an entrance to the Internet -Provide e-mail account to user · Send e-mail · Receive e-mail
Connecting to an ISP · Each time you want to use the Internet you must log-on -Logging on it the process of contacting the Internet Service Provider · Business, Universities, Public Libraries, and Government Institutions have networks that are part of the Internet -These locations maintain a constant connection to the Internet
Congratulations you’re logged on; now what?
· Once connected to the Internet, you will need to use a Web Browse · Web Browsers allow you to -Load Web Pages -Create Favorites -View history of sites visited -Links to other sites -Go back forward and reload Web pages -Set security levels for Web pages you load
Types of Browsers
· Graphical browser -Allows you to access text, color, video, sound, and multimedia presentations on the Internet · Text Browsers -Provides access to only text on the Internet

· Every site on the Internet has its own unique address · The descriptive address identifies the domain or levels of organization -For example Ravan.math.uiaho.edu

· Types of Domain Extension -Edu= education -Com=commercial service -Gov=government -Mil=military -Net=network provider -Org=organization
User Names
After connecting to an ISP, you will have to decide on a unique user name This will identify your account with your ISP For Example: bbrown@newnet.com bbrown is the user name Newnet.com is the ISP’s host computer

Universal Resource Locator · Specific and unique address of a particular document, file, graphic, sound, or video on the World Wide Web
Search Engines
· Maintain an index of all Web pages on the WWW · Search through the use of keywords · Each search engine has its own set of rules on how to find specific sites
Directories
· Similar to a card catalog · Provide a general link to directories which contain subcategory lists · For example: -Entertainment- >Movies->Actors->Tom Hanks · Disadvantage -Only provide links to directory not entire WWW

· Pull Down menus( files, edit, view, go etc) · Toolbar( back, forward, stop, home, etc · Address Box · Status Bar · Scroll Bar · Close, Minimize, Maximize buttons · Title Bar
Using the Address Box
· Contains a text box in which you can type the URL of the Web pages you want to load · Identify location of the Address Box on your Browser -Type an appropriate Web address in the box and hit enter -Remember rules for address learned previously(( URL/Domain))
Toolbar
· Provides shortcuts to frequently perform tasks · Locate the toolbar on your desktop · Review the major tools: -Back/forward -Reload/Refresh -Home -Stop
Title Bar Contains the allocation name or title of the current web page
Scroll Bar
Scroll Bar · Use this to see information that cannot be seen on your screen · Some Web pages are made to be viewed on larder monitors. Therefore, it is necessary to use the scroll bar to view all material
Status Bar
· Displays information about the current web page · Locate the Status Bar: -Type the URKL on the Address box and hit enter -Watch the status bar keep you updated on the status of your page
Pull Down Menus
· Edit · View · Go · File · Favorites · Help
Pull Down Menus
· Contains the menu commands you can use to perform specific tasks. · Most common users are: -File- Print Page -Edit- Copy page -View- View information -Go- back, forward, home -Help- gives user helpful information
History
· Most Browsers will keep track of your URLs that were visited in its history folder · This is useful in finding information that you previously have found and want to go back to
Favorites/bookmarks
· The easiest way to keep a record of a URL with a useful information is to bookmark the site · Steps to favorites -Go to the site -Select add bookmark -Leave site -Got to favorites and click on your bookmark

Well right now i am in computer apps. learning more about this Live Jouranl! Today has been better from last night! I'm still debating on some things. I really want to make a decision on moving! i really want to leave but i don't think i coulc make it down at my dad's house. It's really sad because all i want is to see him but i can't because he is never at home! Some things tell me to stay but i dont want to! please help me make a decision on what i should do! so theres two lists going around school, a list of guys and girls! weel this list is affecting kids in many ways! as dani said they could kill themseleves nowing these kinds today! hopefully that nobody has filled out the lists so dont do it! well i am about to start to present my project so i will talk to all of yall later! wise words of kelli holt....."wUv YaLl!" to much love yo everybody!

Well, this is my first journal entry ever! I don't know how to use this thing but I will learn from dani and Mac and Billy during Comp. Apps tomorrow! Also, i will learn from Chaz! hes very smart! Well anyways, I'm sitting at my computer thinking about a lot of things. First, what about this cold I have! It's horrible! Everybody wash there hands because if you dont your gonna get very sick and I am NOT kidding! Second, I have a really big test tomorrow in Math and I dont think that I am ready to take it! Oh well! Third, what kind of Thanksgiving it will be. It has been a couple of years since both of my g-rents has passed away! I dont want to think about it though! Fourth thing, is what I am going to wear to school tomorrow! I dont know! And lastly, i am debating on if i should still stick with golf or play softball? I dont know! Its a big decision and I dont want to mess up my swing that took about forver to get under control! Well i hafta go study and do some notecards so much love ot everybody! Happy Thanksgiving!
